We only had a couple of minutes walk to the ticket office so we bought our tickets (68 so it'd better be good!) and joined the queue for the funicular. Unlike the castle ones recently this one was 400m high and ridiculously steep! From there we followed the path for about 10 minutes through the Celtic graveyard where some amazing artifacts and burials have been discovered and to the mine entrance. There was a 30 minute queue until our tour started and the group was quite large, 65 people. We donned the delightful supplied overalls and followed the guide into the mine. Outside we had been baking with our masks giving our faces a sheen of sweat, inside the temperature dropped to 8 degrees and the masks were almost welcome! The talks on the tour were interesting but the group size and dual languages slowed everything down so what should have been 45 minutes actually took 90. We saw how modern salt is mined (basically fracking) and how rock salt is mined too. We took the slide down between levels, one of those experiences people tell you are 'fun', and saw an underground lake. This was apparently the size of a football pitch but was so poorly illuminated you couldn't really get any idea. The tour ended with a railway trip back to the start. I'd rate it as interesting but not really worth the time or money although our guide, Sophie, was excellent.

A very interesting place to explore for the history of Hallstatt's salt mine since the old (prehistoric) time. The decoration and exhibition are very nice. Informative guide. A bit exciting journey route.
Your to salt mine can’t be more exciting! There is a lot of information even for adults, really friendly staff repeating everything in English. And for sure sledding inside the mine to lower level - none will stay indifferent for that!
What an amazing tour- best tour I have ever been on! Worth every penny - 34 to include a return trip on the funicular (usually 18 alone) and then an engaging 2 hour tour of the salt mines, the tunnels, the hidden caves and salt lakes 500m inside a mountain! This also includes free access to the UNESCO world heritage sight viewpoint of Hallstatt lake! The tour of the mine was much better than I expected- arrive to a very professional set up and tour, with friendly tour guides. Tours are held in German and English side by side, with all graphic/ videos having English subtitles. We got our mining outfits (to protect clothes) and led through the mines on the tour. This includes 2 slides to get deeper into the mine, which is very fun, and a train ride through the mines at the end! Highly recommend what an amazing tour, view, walk, funicular.
Had a good time with our guide Sophie Z. Interesting stories and very nice vieuw of the area from the viewpoint! Quite expensive though.. Also had to pay for parking and the picture that was taken. We had a good time but I’m not sure if it was worth the money.
Definitely the best experience in Hallstatt. The funicular ride up was very calm and scenic and at the top there is a point with an amazing view of the entire city and surrounding landscape. The actual tour through the mines is also incredible with the not too much walking some sliding doors and a range of interesting videos, which are both educational and exciting to watch. Even if you usually suffer form claustrophobia I would say if it is mild it should not be a problem as the spaces inside are usually very large and spacious. The tour guide spoke both fluent German and English and was very capable and understanding throughout the tour. Definitely recommend!
