The property, which has been owned by the monastery of Heiligenkreuz since 1550, was acquired by Crown Prince Rudolf in 1886 and converted into a hunting lodge. On the night of January 30, 1889, the Austro-Hungarian heir to the throne, Crown Prince Rudolf , died here together with his beloved Mary Vetsera . The circumstances are still unclear, since the Viennese court destroyed key documents and had oblige eyewitnesses to silence. According to the current state of research, the suffering from depression Rudolf first shot his lover, the almost 18-year-old baroness Vetsera; then he killed himself by a head shot.
Small and Beautiful church. Worth the trip to visit.
Stunning woodwork and ceiling paintings by the munks.
Interesting place! You learn a lot about the sad story of the King's family.
The room and restaurant were clean and extremely well decorated. The breakfast was abundant and delicious. We also ate dinner there and it was well prepared and moderately priced. We would recommend it to everyone.
Attractive place.
