The staff is very cooperative and friendly. Every thing is done under one roof and on spot.

As a foreigner, it's a little confusing to know where to go to register my new address, but a beautiful woman inside the Standesamt told me it's the door across the plaza on the left with 'Rathaus' above it. For the foreigners, just walk in, fill in the Meldeamt on the right (bring a pen!), and walk into any room there with a green light lit. The woman I spoke to was kind, knowledgeable, spoke excellent English, and I even got a special welcome gift from the Mayor as a new resident of Villach.

Very unpleasant experience. I arrived from the US to do research at the local university. Even though I have a EU citizenship and therefore can stay in Austria up to 3 months without a residence permit, I was told I need register with the local authorities. So I filled out my Meldezettel form and came here to register my address. I politely told what I wanted to do but the man behind the desk kept telling me in German that \This is Austria so you should speak German\. I do understand the language a bit but I can't speak it freely so again, I apologized and told him that I do not speak German. His answer was ot my problem\. This went on for a few minutes when he finally looked at my Meldezettel and told me I could sit down. And yes, we talked in English from that moment on. Overall, the clerk was very rude and made me feel uncomfortable and unwelcomed. It's true that I don't speak German but it can't be a real expectation that I learn the local language 3 days after arriving. Especially that I'm staying short term. I don't know what made him behave like this but I'm deeply shocked by this treatment. And to be clear, I didn't expect them to speak English at the Magistrat. It's a simple form I submitted, they could have had me registered easily without speaking a common language. Kind of like how I can get along everywhere else, in shops, cafés, restaurants, in a taxi, etc. Language barrier (which was clearly not the case) is no excuse for being rude. Ican only hope that my encounter was an exception and this is not the default treatment of foreigners coming to Villach. It just makes me sad...
