Mark Andrew Wootton

The Father of Genetics was the German Augustinian monk Gregor Mendel who was born in July 1822 and died in the Chek Republic in January 1884. In his childhood he was a keen gardener and studied beekeeping. Between 1856 and 1863 he carried out experiments with pea plants which established the laws of heredity. He worked on seven traits in peas:- plant height, pod colour and shape, seed colour and shape and flower position and colour. He discovered that certain traits were recessive and others were dominant. The importance of his work was not recognised until more than 30yrs later. He was educated at Palacky University between 1840-1843 and Vienna University. I learned about Mendel while studying O level Biology at school.
